50by30 Campaign recognised with Premier Prince Michael Award 2020

The Towards Zero Foundation is proud to receive the prestigious Prince Michael Premier International Road Safety Award for the #50by30 global advocacy campaign.

The special award is presented to the organisation His Royal Highness considers to have had the most impact on road safety during the year.

The #50by30 campaign was one of the central advocacy collaborations in the lead up to the United Nations Resolution on Improving Global Road Safety. Designed and led by the Towards Zero Foundation (TZF), the campaign pushed for the inclusion of a target to reduce road deaths and serious injuries by 50% by 2030 in the resolution. #50by30 continues as a multi-stakeholder partnership which seeks to bring together public and private entities aligned to the key road safety objectives of the UN Global Goals.

The campaign was officially launched at the Sixth Global Meeting of Road Safety NGOs in Crete in April 2019 where many road safety stakeholders announced their support of the #50by30 objectives. The campaign launch was followed by a series of high profile media and advocacy events in 2019, culminating in its inclusion in the Ministerial Stockholm Declaration ahead of adoption by the UN General Assembly in its 2020 Road Safety Resolution.

David Ward, Towards Zero President said,

“On behalf of the entire Towards Zero Foundation team and all our campaign partners, it’s an honour to receive this prestigious recognition of our work from Prince Michael. His Royal Highness has been a tireless supporter of road safety and has helped set the policy agenda as we begin the second UN Decade of Action for Road Safety.”

Lauchlan McIntosh, Towards Zero Foundation Board of Trustees Chairman said,

“We are enormously proud of the work by the entire Towards Zero Foundation team in leading this collaborative campaign, and especially of the contribution made by our late friend and colleague Alex Ward. Alex’s passion and determination in working to ensure the adoption of #50by30 played a central role in the advocacy campaign’s success.

“Sadly, Alex passed away before the UN resolution was adopted but would have been immensely proud of this outcome and honoured by the award and this special mention from Prince Michael. I feel that this would also be a tribute to Alex, who I know did so much to achieve these successes despite his illness. The campaign is a real memorial to his work. It’s a great tribute to Alex’s dedication to the campaign and his commitment to the cause of global road safety.”
