HRH Prince Michael speaking today during @RoadSafety2020 “The task in the decade ahead is to move beyond merely stabilising the number of road deaths. That’s why the target to halve road deaths and serious injuries by 2030 is so important.” Full speech: http://bit.ly/2wyTHNV

Setting ambitious targets is recognised as an effective policy to improve road safety. Target setting has also become increasingly viewed as an essential part of the safe system approach to casualty reduction. We discuss both today as we #SpeakUp in support of #UNGRSW and set a road casualty reduction agenda for beyond 2020. #50by30
“The agent of change in global road safety has been NGOs. There would have been no Decade of Action without the NGOs. Road Safety would not be in the SDGs without NGOs. That’s why NGOs must lead the #50by30 campaign to halve road deaths & serious injuries by 2030.” @DavidDjward
"My three-point plan, to set a new UN target for 2030, to boost funding, and to increase political commitment for road safety, is inter-related. A target is needed to measure performance, funds are needed for effectiveness, and political commitment is needed for action. All three are about leadership. The ITF Summit is a unique forum where Transport Ministers can demonstrate leadership and I am very grateful for this opportunity to address you and to make this request."

Funding for global road safety initiatives remains wholly inadequate. With the notable exception of @BloombergDotOrg, @FIAFdn and some official bilateral donors resources at present are far below the estimated $770 million per year required to achieve the reductions in road fatalities and serious injuries envisaged by the #SDGs.
